When we opened BikeBike 15 years ago not only did we set out to sell as many cool bikes as we could, our bigger mission was to support the growth of an urban cycling community that did not exist at that time. Yes, we had unique bikes that other shops did not offer and yes, we worked to offer an not-at-all intimidating bike shop experience that welcomed everyone. The many years of continuous monthly events we organized were all super fun but had a much bigger goal in mind: We wanted all of you to meet each other, make connections, foster new friendships, make your own plans together, explore this beautiful city, and all the while having a blast bombing around on bikes. This year we’ve found ourselves reflecting back on all these crazy years and we’re not really sure why. Nadia and I both think it’s because we are both in better head space than either of us have been in years and both of us have overcome some physical challenges that had been dragging us down for years too. Now that we’re past those challenges we’ve both been able to look up a little bit, look around a little bit, and perhaps realize that the initial dream of fostering that urban cycling community has actually come to fruition. And that feels really good. We did something that is way bigger than us and we’ve made our city better by it. We’ve been around long enough to watch some of you grow from young adults into moms and dads now buying bikes for your kids. Or maybe we sold you a Linus all those years ago and now you’re back to for a cargo bike to move your growing family around. When we opened we never imagined how wonderful that would feel to be a part of your lives. We re truly blessed. Community is not something that happens - it’s something you do.
